Kids zone

There were lots of articles and ideas for planting, but the ones that really excited me were the art projects.  Pinterest is a really good place to find a wide collection of kids arts and crafts projects (and almost everything else!).  In particular I liked the ideas Richard Shilling has for outdoor art, with my favourite being the leaf totem poles (see picture).  If you want to find out more, visit this website – Land art for kids

Do you have any art or kids allotment activities?

New plots created!

new plots 2

Have you seen the new plots that have been created? The Committee had a digger in last week to create new plots where the Christmas trees used to be, by the chicken run and also along the river bank (see picture).

It doesn’t look much now, but the soil is good and I’m sure they’ll be full of colour and produce in the summer!

The challenge of weeds

With all this rain – and now warm weather – the weeds have been growing like crazy. I seem to spend all of my time hoeing and hand weeding. So imagine my delight when I saw how effective it was using a rotovator to clear  very weedy bed.

When the photograph above was taken Paul had been working for about 5 minutes. He managed to clear the bed in under 10 minutes, but then went over it to make sure everything was chopped up. Three days later and there are no signs of weeds – in fact it looks like the perfect tool for clearing large areas relatively quickly.

I might give it a go someday soon!

Bye for now
